Intergenerational Policy Update + Call to Action

The House just passed a budget bill that threatens essential lifelines for grandfamilies, children, youth, and older adults across the country.

With more than $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid and $300 billion to SNAP, this legislation would place enormous strain on families, especially grandparents and other relatives raising children. These programs provide more than just food and health care. They are crucial to maintaining mental and emotional well-being.

When families lose access to basic needs like food, health coverage, and community-based services, stress increases, mental health declines, and caregivers are left with overwhelming responsibilities.

This bill would:

  • Impose harsh Medicaid and SNAP work and paperwork requirements
  • Shift Medicaid and SNAP program costs to states
  • Deepen income inequality while doing little to support families
